Canalisation of the Gully: In 1903 a flash flood heavily eroded the Enseu stream, creating a barrage of rock and sediments in the river that caused the salt mines to be flooded. The disaster was of such magnitude that in 1906, work began to correct the gorge. The works were overambitious, with retaining and stabilising walls built using limestone blocks carved on site.
