Plant remains that fall on the ground provide food for the entire community of animals, fungi and soil bacteria, which carry out the composting of them.
However the process varies according to the type of leaf.
Plane leaf litter acts as a waterproof roof or covering during a long time because its decomposition rate is very slow.
Poplar leaf litter. This decomposes well in the winter.
Alder leaf litter decomposes quickly during the winter favouring fast recycling of the nutrients.
