The volume of water in the river is not constant and cannot always transport equally. Swells, which are fairly infrequent, are mainly responsible for erosion and transporting the pebbles of finer rocks and sediments.
All along the river there is a prominent presence of blocks of stone and pebbles.
Pebbles and blocks are the names used for all those fragments of rock measuring more than 6 cm in diameter, with rounded edges owing to the erosion suffered during transport by the river.
The smaller materials, gravel, sand or mud, can only sediment in spots with weak currents.
The diversity of stones on the river bed reflects that of the rocks in the mountains that the river has crossed, and explains the chromatic diversity of the constructions in the salt bed areas.
