The official name of the spring is "Manantial: mina Ofita" (Ophite Well Spring) and it is characterised by its abundant outflowing water volume. The water has an average concentration of NaCl of 8-10º Baumé (around 70 g per litre, double that of sea water) and emerges at a temperature of 21º C.
This is the spring, the underground cavity from which the salt water emerges.
The stone vault over the cave where the spring is found is impregnated with salt, which forms small stalactites.
Detail of the saline formations, diverse, more or less compact precipitates, that cover the walls and roof of the well.
The water from the channel passes through this small building, where it activates the water wheel that moves the salt water elevation pump.
The salt water from the spring had to be elevated to be able to distribute it among all the salt beds. The image shows the remains of the old piston pump that elevated the water.
